Automatic $1,200 program fee discount for UK students!

Program Overview
University of Kentucky students can study at the University of Newcastle The University of Newcastle is situated approximately seven miles west of the city and is accessible via train, bus or bike from the city center. The campus is set in a natural bushland setting, close to some of Australia’s most beautiful beaches. The University of Newcastle prides itself in producing self-confident, well-equipped, ‘job-ready’ graduates. Employment rates and starting salaries for University of Newcastle graduates are higher than the national average. For more information, including blog posts and instragram photos from past participants, follow this link.

At the University of Newcastle, UK students will have access to all of the institutions schools and departments, including Business and Law, Education and Arts, Engineering and Built Environment, Health and Medicine, and Science and Information Technology.

The Bluegrass Down Under portfolio allows students to access coursework in many subjects - from computer science to zoology - while providing the opportunity to engage Australian culture. Australia boasts one of the more interesting demographic landscapes in the world - for example, the urban centers of Sydney and Melbourne have populations of upwards of 4 million people and see a great deal of international traffic, while other parts of the outback are sparsely populated. Add in the presence of an aboriginal culture that has existed for over 50,000 years, and Australia becomes an exciting opportunity for intercultural collaboration and academic learning.
- Automatic $1,200 fee reduction for UK students!
- Take a full semester load of courses in subjects ranging from accounting to urban planning.
- Explore the Great Barrier Reef and tropical far north Australia during your comprehensive six-day Orientation Program, with a week of adventure and learning.
- Take advantage of surf lessons, the Sydney Opera House, and more!

Academic Credit
Students will earn transfer credit from the Univresity of Newcastle. For all successfully completed courses, the credit hours, course title and course equivalency will be indicated on the UK transcript. Students must complete the coursework during this program according to the established guidelines by the University of Newcastle. The grades earned will be important to progression in future academic endeavors, including graduate or professional school; however the grades earned will NOT be indicated on the UK transcript. For more information visit the UK Education Abroad Academic Credit website.
  • For those courses without predetermined equivalencies, PRIOR to participating on this program, students must complete an Academic Approval Form (AAF). The AAF indicates how the course will be used, or course equivalency, once they are transferred back to UK. Instructions on how to complete the AAF are included in application materials.
  • Upon completion of the term abroad, the transcript should be sent to the UK Education Abroad office. Once received, Education Abroad staff will facilitate the transfer of credits to UK.
  • All students will be enrolled in EAP 599: Study Abroad (1 credit hour) at UK during their term abroad.
Student Life
Newcastle students choose between living in university managed, on-campus housing with an option for self- or fully catered facilities (with the option of a single room pending availability). On-campus accommodation offers the convenience of easy access to all sporting, library, health, and academic facilities available to students, as well as walking distance to campus. Alternatively, students can choose TEAN off-campus accommodation located in close proximity to public transportation, nightlife, local parks, iconic beaches, and cafes and restaurants. Off-campus accommodations offer a choice of single or shared room arrangements featuring kitchens, restrooms on each floor, and a shared living space that includes a television, couches, and lounge space for studying and getting to know your Australian housemates. Local TEAN staff arrange various activities during the semester designed to help immerse students into the local culture. In addition, if students have a specific interest or hobby, the TEAN Resident Director will be able to point them in the right direction.
