Why Education Abroad?
Our office is called Education Abroad instead of Study Abroad because UK students are engaging in many international activities beyond a traditional study abroad program. Students are receiving academic credit for completing internships, independent academic study and research, and international service-learning. In addition, many students engage in valuable cultural and international experience through non-academic teaching and volunteer opportunities.
Important Policies
All UK students participating in an international program that offers academic credit must apply to and be approved by Education Abroad at UK prior to their abroad program. We encourage all students who plan to go abroad to make an appointment with an EA Advisor who specializes in their country of destination. There may be special resources, alumni contacts, or funding opportunities that the student can take advantage of for their abroad experience.
Who May Participate in Education Abroad
All UK students (undergraduates and graduate/professional) who are in good academic standing with the University of Kentucky and who satisfy the minimum eligibility requirements for their chosen program may participate in Education Abroad.
Every major at UK can participate in an Education Abroad experience, although some majors will require more advance planning.
Education Abroad at UK strives to assist all students in finding appropriate programs and sources of funding.
Students may first participate in Education Abroad the summer following their Freshman year, or after completing 30 hours of coursework (2 semesters).
Seniors may petition to waive their residency requirement and it is automatically waived for UK-Sponsored programs and all exchanges. But seniors are advised that their graduation date may be delayed if they choose to go abroad their final semester. We suggest that students go abroad prior to their final semester.
Transfer students may participate in Education Abroad programs after completing one full semester at UK.
Preparing Students for Education Abroad
Students should provide their Academic Advisor with printed course descriptions for the courses they intend to take abroad, as well as an EA Academic Approval Form.
Important items to discuss during academic advising appointments:
Education Abroad receives and archives all foreign transcripts and collaborates with academic departments to determine UK course equivalencies. Once equivalencies are set, the results are delivered to the Registrar's Office to be posted to the student's UK transcript as transfer credit.

Important items to discuss during academic advising appointments:
- Will the semester abroad affect the student's expected graduation date?
- How will the course taken abroad fit into the student's academic plan?
- In the case of credit by examination, how will the courses be evaluated upon return?
- Which courses will the student take upon his or her return to UK?
- What will be the method of communication from abroad with regard to lifting advisor holds for UK registration and proposing alternate courses?

Role of the Education Abroad (EA) Advisor
EA Advisors collaborate with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to determine whether the proposed institution abroad is approved by the University of Kentucky.
EA Advisors assist students with locating programs abroad that fit their academic and personal interests. EA Advisors may also assist the student in obtaining course descriptions at the host institution. EA Advisors prepare the student by helping to locate financial, social, health, and logistical resources, prepare the student for cultural differences and adjustments, and provide opportunities for a student to develop ideas and experiences gained during the abroad experience.
