Education Abroad at UK

The EA Process - the steps to going abroad!

Puerto Escondido  Copenhagen view  China

The Education Abroad at UK process involves proper planning and meeting all deadlines. A basic outline of what to expect is below, but the most important step is to first attend an IDEA Session.

1. Get a Passport! Information is available at travel.state.gov/passport

2. Attend an IDEA Session

This session will answer many of your questions about Education Abroad regardless of program or destination, with an emphasis on narrowing your options and researching programs.

IDEA Sessions are held in 207 Bradley Hall every Wednesday and Thursday from 3-4pm

3. Create your Education Abroad profile on the EA website: http://abroad.ad.uky.edu

This is the first step in the Education Abroad application process. On the EA homepage, click on the link for first-time applicants. After submitting a short questionnaire, your personal EA homepage will be created.

4. Research program options and begin narrowing your EA options

Browse our programs!

5. Make an appointment with an EA Advisor

After attending an IDEA Session and submitting the Pre-Application questionnaire, you can make an appointment with an EA Advisor to discuss program options and the EA process.

6. Choose a program

IMPORTANT: You must also complete the application for your chosen program, which is separate from and in addition to your EA at UK application. This application may have earlier deadlines.

EA Deadlines for Summer and Fall: April 1st

EA Deadlines for Winter and Spring: November 1st

EA Deadlines for Scholarship Applications: March 1st and/or October 1st

7. Attend a Pre-Departure Orientation

This mandatory session is designed and delivered by Education Abroad Ambassadors. Topics discussed include health and safety, travel and packing tips, money, budgeting, communication, inter-cultural understanding, culture shock, food, and transportation.

8. Get on the plane! Go abroad!

9. Come back and stay involved

After you return, your credits will transfer back to UK. You will need to complete a Program Evaluation and attend a Re-Entry Session, which will provide you with an opportunity to learn how to market your Education Abroad experience and network with other returnees.
