Frequently Asked Questions
All UK students (undergraduate and graduate/professional) may study abroad regardless of major, although some majors require earlier planning.
UK students may first study abroad the summer after their freshman year or after completing 30 hours of coursework. Transfer students must successfully complete one full-time semester at UK before studying abroad.
Part-time students and staff participating in the Employee Education Benefits program are eligible to participate in Education Abroad, but are ineligible to apply for the EA at UK scholarship.
Students from other institutions may participate in certain UK-Sponsored (faculty/staff-led) programs by applying to UK as a visiting student.
All UK students (undergraduate and graduate/professional) who are participating in an international program that offers academic credit must apply to, and be approved by, Education Abroad at UK prior to going abroad.
In addition, all participants (students, faculty, staff, family and community members) on UK-Sponsored or UK-Affiliated abroad programs must submit certain application materials to EA at UK.

EA at UK operates under two annual application cycles:
Undergraduate students who wish to study abroad during the Summer or Fall terms should begin the EA Application Process by March 1 and must complete the process by April 1.

For Winter and Spring terms the EA Application should be started by October 1 and must be completed by November 1.
Important: The "complete by" deadlines are firm.
Graduate/Professional students have a rolling deadline for certain individualized opportunities but should follow the above deadlines for regular programs.
My chosen program is not listed on the EA website. How do I apply?
You may still apply to a program that is not listed on our website. Either provide the program identifying information on the Pre-Application Questionnaire or to your EA Advisor. We will review the program and add it to the EA website and your EA homepage.
Who may apply for an EA at UK scholarship?
Full-time UK students who are participating in a credit-bearing international program of at least two weeks duration may apply for an Education Abroad at UK scholarship.
How and When do I apply for the EA at UK Scholarship?
The EA at UK Scholarship application is available online for you to download and complete. The deadlines are October 1st (Winter and Spring programs) and March 1st (Summer and Fall programs). Please refer to the Scholarships page to see other available scholarship funds as well.
Do I also need to submit an application to the program provider?
Yes! Most students must also complete the separate application process for the program they have chosen. This is usually submitted directly to the program provider.
What is an IDEA Session?
Our Information and Discussion of Education Abroad (IDEA) Sessions are held every Wednesday and Thursday from 3-4 pm in room 207 Bradley Hall. These sessions are the first step in the EA process.
What is ISP 599?
ISP 599 counts as full-time enrollment at UK, which allows students to utilize Federal Financial Aid and institutional aid for their abroad program. Students will not be charged tuition for other UK courses in which they are enrolled during the same term as ISP 599.
ISP 599 is a one credit hour pass/fail course that has three requirements:
- Attend a Pre-Departure Orientation
- Attend a Re-Entry Session
- Submit a Program Evaluation
All undergraduate students (and certain graduate/professional students) on credit-bearing abroad programs will be enrolled in this course during the term they are abroad and charged one credit hour of UK tuition.
ISP 599 counts as full-time enrollment at UK, which allows students to utilize Federal Financial Aid and institutional aid for their abroad program. Students will not be charged tuition for other UK courses in which they are enrolled during the same term as ISP 599.
